Shirley Alston Reeves is an American soul singer who rose to fame as the lead vocalist of the Shirelles, a popular singing group. The Shirelles were made up of Owens' friends from Passaic High School in New Jersey: Doris Kenner Jackson, Addie Micki Harris, and Beverly Lee. Shirley Alston and then Shirley Alston Reeves were her married names.
Jackson was the logical option for their main lead vocalist because of her powerful, unique voice, however, she also sang lead on a few tracks. Gerald Alston, her nephew, is the main vocalist of The Manhattans. Throughout the 1960s, Reeves and the Shirelles had a series of hits.
