Shirin Neshat is an Iranian-born artist and filmmaker based in New York. The Women of Allah series, which investigated the subject of gender in connection to Islamic extremism and militancy, was among Neshat's early photographic works. Her following video works deviated from overtly political themes or critique in favor of more lyrical visuals and nuanced human storylines.
