Beware of God, a collection of short tales, and Foreskin's Lament, a memoir, have both been published by Auslander. His work has been featured in The New Yorker and Public Radio International's This American Life, frequently addressing his Orthodox Jewish roots. He explored the house when he was younger and destroyed all the pornographic entertainment he discovered. He disobeyed his Orthodox Jewish upbringing as an adult. In January 2012, Auslander published Hope: A Tragedy, a book nominated for the 2013 Thurber Prize, and imagined a landowner in upstate New York discovering an aging and lewd Anne Frank hiding out in his loft. The Jewish Quarterly-Wingate Award was given to it.
