About Sebastian Junger

Sebastian Junger Biography

Sebastian Junger, the author of THE PERFECT STORM, FIRE, A DEATH IN BELMONT, WAR, and TRIBE, is the number one New York Times bestselling novelist. Asas a National Magazine Award-winning journalist, a contributing editor to Vanity Fair, and a special reporter at ABC Ne, he has covered important international news events worldwide. He has also won a Peabody Award. The feature-length documentary "Restrepo," which Junger co-directed with Tim Hetherington, earned the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance and received an Academy Award nomination. Junger is also a documentary filmmaker. It is widely acknowledged that "Restrepo," which followed the deployment of a platoon of American soldiers in Afghanistan's Korengal Valley, pioneered combat reporting. Since then, Junger has produced three other documentaries about war and its effects. The HBO documentary "Which Way Is The Front Line From Here?" highlights his friend and colleague, photojournalist Tim Hetherington, who passed away in 2011 while reporting on the civil conflict in Libya. Returning to fighting, "Korengal" addresses the age-old query of why young men avoid going to war. In "The Last Patrol," which also had its HBO debut, Junger and three friends—all of whom had been in battle, either as soldiers or reporters—travel along the East Coast train lines on foot as "high-speed vagrants," exploring the difficulties of coming home from war. Along with these publications, Junger has written for Men's Journal, National Geographic Adventure, Outside, Harper's, and The New York Times Magazine. His coverage of Afghanistan in 2000, which included a profile of Ahmed Shah Massoud, the leader of the Northern Alliance and the man who was killed just days before 9/11, was featured in the National Geographic film "Into the Forbidden Zone" and introduced Americans to the Afghan resistance fighting the Taliban. He has residences in Cape Cod and New York City.
