Philip Bredesen is an American politician and businessman who served as the 48th governor of Tennessee from 2003 to 2011. Bredesen began his career as a businessman, co-founding HealthAmerica Corporation and serving as its CEO from 1980 to 1993. He later served as mayor of Nashville from 1991 to 1999 before being elected governor in 2002.
During his time in office, Bredesen focused on improving education and healthcare in Tennessee, implementing reforms to increase teacher pay and reduce the number of uninsured residents. He also oversaw creation of the Tennessee Promise program, which provides free community college tuition to the state's high school graduates.
