Saru Jayaraman Biography

Co-founding and serving as president of the Restaurant Opportunities Centers United (ROC United), Saru Jayaraman is also the director of the University of California Berkeley's Food Labor Research Center. Following 9/11, she worked with dislocated World Trade Center workers to start ROC, which employs more than 32,000 specialists, 500 business partners, and 23,000 customers throughout twelve states. Saru graduated from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and Yale Law School. She received a James Beard Foundation Leadership Award in 2015 and was named one of CNN's "Main 10 Visionary Women" in 2014. The White House also recognized her as a Champion of Change in 2014. She attended the 2018 Golden Globes as Amy Poehler's guest in January and brought with her a general awareness of the problem of improper behavior in the café industry. Saru was one of the eight female activists who attended the Globes as part of the #TimesUp movement. The national bestseller Beyond the Kitchen Door (Cornell University Press 2013) and Forked: A New Standard for American Eating were written by Saru (Oxford University Press 2016). She has been on shows including the Today Show, NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams, and the Today Show with Soledad O'Brien, Bill Moyers Journal, Melissa Harris-Perry, and UP with Chris Hayes on MSNBC.
