Callies had conceived in La Grange, Illinois, and relocated to Honolulu, Hawaii, with her family when she was one year old. While Callies' parents are professors at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, she didn't follow in their footsteps. Instead, she opted to seek a profession in acting. She demonstrated her love of performing during her early years by participating in many school productions at the independent Punahou School. After graduating high school, she enrolled at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. She continued to contribute to the theatre with her exams. She continued her education at the National Theater Conservatory in Colorado, earning her Master of Fine Arts in 2002. Callies' first television role was as Kate O'Malley in the quick-paced CBS series Queens Supreme. Her first prominent role was as Detective Jane Porter in Tarzan on The WB. After appearances on Dragnet (2003) and NUMB3RS, where she played Sara Tancredi, Callies increased a starring role on Fox's Prison Break. Her employment continued from 2005 to 2009.
