Callies had conceived in La Grange, Illinois, and relocated to Honolulu, Hawaii, with her family when she was one year old. While Callies' parents are professors at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, she didn't follow in their footsteps. Instead, she opted to seek a profession in acting.
She demonstrated her love of performing during her early years by participating in many school productions at the independent Punahou School. After graduating high school, she enrolled at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. She continued to contribute to the theatre with her exams.
