Sarah Smarsh is a writer living in Kansas who has written on politics, public policy, and socioeconomic class for several publications, including The New York Times and The Guardian. She was a nominee for the National Book Award with her debut book, Heartland: A Memoir of Working Hard and Being Broke in the Richest Country on Earth.
Smarsh, a research fellow at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in 2018, frequently speaks and writes about economic inequality. In addition, she is the host and executive producer of the podcast series The Homecomers, which features American working-class and rural community advocates.
