After leaving Greensboro College, she started attending the University of North Carolina, where she earned an honors degree. She worked as a waiter for a while before quitting to become a teacher at UNC. She later left that job to pursue writing full-time. Both Someone Like You and That Summer inspired the 2003 Mandy Moore-starring movie How to Deal.
