The Emily Hargroves Fisher Professor of Education at Harvard University, Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot, is a sociologist who has won the MacArthur Prize and has been on the faculty there since 1972. The Good High School: Portraits of Character and Culture (1983), which won the 1984 Outstanding Book Award from the American Educational Research Association, and Beyond Bias: Perspectives on Classrooms (1979) (with Jean Carew) are three of the nine books that Lawrence-Lightfoot has authored as a teacher, researcher, author, and public intellectual. I've Known Rivers: Lives of Loss and Liberation (1994) and The Art and Science of Portraiture (1997) (with Jessica Hoffmann Davis) are the books that follow Balm in Gilead: Journey of a Healer, which won the 1988 Christopher Award for "literary merit and humanitarian achievement," and which describe the author's groundbreaking methodology for social science that unites aesthetics and empiricism. Lawrence-Lightfoot delves deeply into the human experience to uncover the core of this potent characteristic in Respect: An Investigation (1999). She won Harvard's George Ledlie Award in 1993 for research that "makes the most meaningful contribution to science" and "the benefit of mankind" after receiving the coveted MacArthur Medal in 1984. She was designated a Spencer Senior Scholar in 1995, and the Academy of Political and Social Sciences named her a Margaret Mead Fellow in 2008. Upon her retirement, the Emily Hargroves Fisher Endowed Chair will be renamed the Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot Endowed Chair, making her the first African American woman to hold such a position in Harvard's annals. Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot studied psychology as an undergrad at Swarthmore College from 1962 to 1966 before earning a Ph.D. in sociology of education from Harvard in 1972.
