Marley Dias made headlines as a sixth grader when she initiated the #1000BlackGirlBooks drive, in which she collected books which feature African-American children as central characters. Her goal was to donate 1,000 books to black girls. Her two friends Briana and Amina joined her campaign to help and they started to be called "BAM" in social media.
The book drive collected more than 9,000 books, which were then sent to a children's book drive in Jamaica. Her book drive led to appearances on shows like The Nightly Show and CBS This Morning.
