Santi White Santigold combines punk reggae grime, indie rock, and electro. She started her musical career in the 1990s while working as an Epic Records A&R representative and contributing to the title track of GZA's 1999 album Under the Surface. At Wesleyan University, she double majored in music and African-American studies.
Stiffed White's voice captured audiences' attention, and Martin Heath of Lizard King Records even offered her a solo deal after watching them perform. Once Stiffed split up and White and her former bandmate John Hill started working on their solo debut, they released the albums Sex Sells in 2003 and Burned Again in 2005.
