Sandra Grimes is a former CIA officer who was part of a small team that investigated and exposed the acts of Aldrich Ames, a counterintelligence officer convicted of espionage for the Soviet Union. A buddy alerted her in October 1966 that a CIA recruiter was on school. He assured her that she would make an excellent spy. She sought this since she was in dire need of work prior to graduation. She was offered a job as a GS-06 Intelligence Assistant after her CIA interview, but she needed security and medical clearances before she could start. When she and her coworkers arrived at the Ames building in Rosslyn, Virginia, they were assigned to the clerical department. Her first position was in the guidance section, which served as a front for tracking down Dmitri Polyakov. She studied Soviet intelligence agencies in order to become familiar with them. She ultimately rose through the ranks of the Branch and was assigned the task of replacing a senior intelligence analyst. She went on to become a Soviet and Eastern European Division officer and spent eleven years with their counterintelligence unit, holding different titles and responsibilities. She learned about the KGB and the GRU as a result of this encounter. She met Jeanne Vertefeuille in the late 1970s as a result of a CI group organizational restructuring. They came up with a plan to split the CI group into two branches, each of which would be responsible for CI dissemination and manufacturing. One would deal with the Soviet Union, while the other would deal with the Eastern European Union. The two branches eventually amalgamated, with Vertefeuille as chief and Grimes as Soviet section chief. She ultimately rose through the ranks to become Africa's deputy chief of external operations. In the end, she was recruited into a CIA operation in Bonn. According to an anonymous write-in involving an individual identified Mr. X, the CIA's Soviet sources were compromised as a result of a breach of the C.I.A communications. The author requested $50,000 in an East Berlin stash or dead drop. Grimes was posted to the Moscow Task Force in March 1987, after being relocated from her job in Africa. The KGB gained access to the protected sections of the US Embassy in Moscow thanks to Marine Guard Arnold Bracy and Clayton Lonetree. Grimes was part of the crew that discovered the first mole in 1992 during a collaborative mole hunt. She linked Ames' meetings with Sergey Dmitriyevich Chuvakhin, his KGB contact, to substantial bank deposits he made in 1985 and 1986. Grimes resigned from the CIA in early 1993.
