Dreamland: The Real Story of America's Opiate Epidemic, published by Bloomsbury Publishing, is his most recent book. He has been a journalist for approximately 30 years.

His first two works were written while living and working as a freelancer in Mexico for ten years. He returned to the country in 2004 to work for the Los Angeles Times, where he wrote on gangs, neighborhood issues, drug trafficking, and immigration.
