Sam Quinones Biography

Sam Quinones is a journalist, storyteller, and the author of three critically praised narrative nonfiction books. He was once a writer for the LA Times. Dreamland: The Real Story of America's Opiate Epidemic, published by Bloomsbury Publishing, is his most recent book. He has been a journalist for approximately 30 years. His first two works were written while living and working as a freelancer in Mexico for ten years. He returned to the country in 2004 to work for the Los Angeles Times, where he wrote on gangs, neighborhood issues, drug trafficking, and immigration. He left the newspaper in 2014 to resume his freelance career, contributing to magazines such as National Geographic, Pacific Standard Magazine, the New York Times, and Los Angeles Magazine. Columbia Journalism School chose him to receive the Maria Moors Cabot award in 2008 for his distinguished career in Latin American coverage. He also won an Alicia Patterson Fellowship in 1998, one of the most esteemed awards offered to print writers. In addition, he runs writing classes called "Tell Your Real Story" and oversees the content of a storytelling website with the same name.
