Rose Mapendo was imprisoned with her family when ethnic violence overwhelmed the Democratic Republic of Congo in the late 1990s. Her devastating experience involves the execution of her husband, the nighttime arrest of her entire family by government agents, the birth of their twin sons in prison, and disheartening agreements with prison guards to save the lives of her children.
She survived this terrible experience and advocated for reconciliation and forgiveness. Mapendo is an important voice in her broken nation's search for peace. Her country has experienced ethnic violence which created wars among other Congolese, the Hutus and Tutsis. Currently, Mapendo is a sought after motivational speaker and global activist for reconciliation and peace.
