After joining the sales force of Libby, Robert Farrell discovered a need to return to the ice cream parlor after an unpleasant experience with his family. In 1963, he opened the first Farrell's Ice Cream Parlour Restaurant in Portland, Oregon, which grew to 65 restaurants by 1972. Farrell's success proved that employing young people could lead to a prosperous business.
His restaurants primarily hired high school and college students he trained to be enthusiastic and service-oriented. After selling the chain to Marriott, Farrell was vice president for five years. Later, he became chairman of the Pacific Coast Restaurant Merchants, who owned a fast-food outlet and several seafood restaurants. Today, Farrell is a full-time speaker, focusing on customer service.
