He was honored with the National Humanities Medal from President Barack Obama in 2010. Caro spent seven years discovering and talking with hundreds of women and men who worked for, with or against Robert Moses, including a number of his top aides while he was writing his first book; The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York.

He looked into files that had never been shared to the public. The Modern Library chose The Power Broker as one of the hundred greatest nonfiction books of the twentieth century.

David Halberstam believes that it is “surely the greatest book ever written about a city.” And according to The New York Times Book Review, “In the future, the scholar who writes the history of American cities in the twentieth century will doubtless begin with this extraordinary effort.” Caro and his wife, Ina, moved from New York City to the Texas Hill Country and then to Washington, D.C., to research The Years of Lyndon Johnson and also to live in the locality where Johnson grew up so as to get more information on his upbringing.

At the Johnson Library in Austin, Caro spent years interviewing men and women connected to Johnson’s life, many had never been interviewed before and he also inspected many documents that he found. The Washington Post cited The first volume of The Years of Lyndon Johnson, The Path to Power: “proof that we live in a great age of biography .

. . [a book] of radiant excellence . . . Caro’s evocation of the Texas Hill Country, his elaboration of Johnson’s unsleeping ambition, his understanding of how politics actually work, are—let it be said flat out—at the summit of American historical writing.” The second volume, Means of Ascent, was called “brilliant” by Professor Henry F.

Graff of Columbia University, and he added saying “No brief review does justice to the drama of the story Caro is telling, which is nothing less than how present-day politics was born.” Volume three, Master of the Senate, was applauded by The London Time as “a masterpiece . . .

Robert Caro has written one of the truly great political biographies of the modern age.” Nicholas von Hoffman also stated that: “Caro has changed the art of political biography.” According to The Boston Globe, “Caro has a unique place among American political biographers” and “He has become, in many ways, the standard by which his fellows are measured.” Caro later became a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University after graduating from Princeton University.

He lives with his wife, Ina, a writer and historian in New York City.
