Bell was a member of the Cleveland Indians (1986-1988), Pittsburgh Pirates (1989-1996), Kansas City Royals (1997), Arizona Diamondbacks (1998-2002), and New York Mets (1998-2002). (2003). In the 1990s, he retained his status as one of the finest shortstops in baseball. His range was barely average, but he had a good understanding of the batters and was well-positioned.
Bell, who was drafted first overall by the Minnesota Twins in 1984, had 129 mistakes in his first three minor-league seasons. He was sold to the Indians the next year in exchange for starter Bert Blyleven, and when he eventually made it to the big in 1986, he faced Blyleven in his first major-league at-bat.
