McLaughlin (together with Tony Oxley and John Surman) recorded Extrapolation in 1969 before relocating to the US. The record demonstrated McLaughlin's technical mastery, strength, quickness, and creativity as a guitarist (such as the ability to play in odd meters). In 1969, he relocated there to join Tony Williams' band Lifetime.
He subsequently played with Miles Davis on his landmark albums In A Silent Way, Bitches Brew (which has a track named after him), Big Fun (where he is featured soloist on Go Ahead John), and A Tribute to Jack Johnson — In the liner notes for Jack Johnson, Davis gave McLaughlin a homage and praised his playing for being "far in." He rejoined the Davis band for one recorded performance during a seven-day club run, which was included on the album Live/Evil.
