Philippe Borremans Biography

Philippe Borremans graduated from the INIREP (Institut International des Relations Publiques) with a degree in Public Relations and began his corporate communications career in 1995 at Porter Novelli International, a worldwide public relations firm. He worked for Federal Express, Iomega, Monsanto, and the Association of Plastic Manufacturers in Europe during his four years as a public relations consultant. He handled national and international public relations initiatives at Porter Novelli, ranging from pure media relations to European Commission-related influencer campaigns on a European level. He began specializing in crisis communications and what was then known as internet public relations in 1997. Union strikes, an airline disaster, a burning site, and product recalls have all been part of his crisis communications expertise. He spent some time at the agency's Boston headquarters in 1998, learning about the newest online advances and how they were applied to traditional public relations. His interest has been using the web and associated technologies as communication and collaboration tools since then. He was asked to join IBM Belgium in the role of Public Relations Manager for the IBM Global Services business unit in October 1999, just in time for Y2K. He was requested to be in charge of all external communications for all IBM business divisions in Belgium and Luxembourg after a year. He oversaw media relations and influencer programs for the firm for the following four years on a variety of topics ranging from innovation, diversity, healthcare, and the environment to virtual worlds and their commercial effect. He was the European coordinator for IBM's online communications operations and the use of social media in public relations from 2005 onwards. He led a virtual team of seven colleagues throughout Europe and became an IBM evangelist, presenting at international conferences and C-level client meetings on a regular basis. Philippe took a one-year sabbatical from IBM in January 2008. In June 2009, he was requested to join the Van Marcke Group of Firms as Chief Social Media Officer, a Belgian holding with many companies engaged in several industries such as wholesale, retail, and manufacturing. The company has a global presence and employs over 1400 people. Philippe was responsible for all online communications, both internal and external, and the rollout of social media inside the company in the framework of corporate communications and cooperation as Chief Social Media Officer, reporting to the organization's founders. Philippe is now an international PR consultant, professional trainer, and keynote speaker based in Casablanca, Morocco. Philippe is a founder member of the International Association of Online Communicators and a member of its board of directors, as well as a full member of the European Association of Communications Directors and a member of the International Public Relations Association's board of directors.
