James Lawler is a retired CIA operations officer turned acclaimed novelist specializing in espionage thrillers. After 25 years with the agency, including as Chief of the Counterproliferation Division’s Special Activities Unit and a Senior Intelligence Service member (1998–2005), he specialized in recruiting foreign spies and in thwarting the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

Now a national security consultant and Senior Partner at MDO Strategies via Special Activities United LLC, Lawler draws from his covert career to craft gripping tales. His debut, “Living Lies: A Novel of the Iranian Nuclear Weapons Program” (2021), follows a CIA officer uncovering a double agent sabotaging U.S.-Iran nuclear talks.
