Paul Romer Biography

Paul Romer is an American economist and policy entrepreneur renowned for his pioneering work in endogenous growth theory, which earned him the 2018 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, alongside William Nordhaus. His research, beginning with his 1983 Ph.D. thesis at the University of Chicago, demonstrated how technological innovation, driven by intentional human actions such as research and development, fuels long-term economic growth. He coined "mathiness” to critique the misuse of mathematics in economics. Romer founded Aplia in 2001, an ed-tech company sold to Cengage Learning in 2007, and served as Chief Economist at the World Bank (2016–2018). He is currently a Seidner University Professor at Boston College, directing the Center for the Economics of Ideas, and has taught at NYU, Stanford, Berkeley, Chicago, and Rochester.
