Dr. Dr. Oluwaferanmi Okanlami holds the endearing name "Dr. O" and dedicates his work to enhancing accessibility as well as promoting inclusion and equity in medical practice and education. Dr. Okanlami was born in Nigeria before moving to the United States where he developed into a resilient social justice advocate. Dr. Okanlami graduated from Stanford University with academic distinction while leading his Track & Field team as captain and becoming an Academic All-American athlete. He received his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School before starting his Orthopedic Surgery residency at Yale University. Following a spinal cord injury that paralyzed his body below the chest Dr. Okanlami earned his Masterâs degree in Engineering, Science, and Technology Entrepreneurship at the University of Notre Dame before finishing his Family Medicine residency at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana.
Dr. Okanlami serves as Director of Student Accessibility and Accommodation Services at the University of Michigan where he leads disability services and testing accommodations and adaptive sports and fitness programs for students. Dr. Okanlami works as an Assistant Professor in Family Medicine and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and Urology at Michigan Medicine and Orthopaedic Surgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Dr. Okanlami has dedicated his life to disability rights advocacy through his "Disabusing Disability" initiative which works to break down misconceptions about disability and highlight the abilities of people with disabilities. He has appeared on CBS News, PBS NewsHour, and MSNBCâs Morning Joe for discussing healthcare diversity and equity topics.
