Nicholas Stern Biography

Professor Nicholas Stern is the IG Patel Professor of Economics and Government at the London School of Economics, Chairman of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, Head of the India Observatory, and President of the British Academy from July 2013 to 2017. He was also elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 2014. Professor Stern has held academic positions at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Ecole Polytechnique and the Collège de France in Paris, the Indian Statistical Institute in Bangalore and Delhi, and the People's University of China in Beijing. From 1994 to 1999, he served as Chief Economist of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and from 2000 to 2003, he served as Chief Economist and Senior Vice President of the World Bank. From 2003 to 2005, he was the Second Permanent Secretary to Her Majesty's Treasury; from 2004 to 2005, he was the Director of Policy and Research for the Prime Minister's Commission for Africa; from 2006 to 2007, he was the Head of the Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change; and from 2003 to 2007, he was the Head of the Government Economic Service. In 2004, he was knighted for contributions to economics, and in 2007 he was made a cross-bench life peer as Baron Stern of Brentford. In 2017, he was named a Companion of Honour for services to economics, international relations, and climate change. He has written over 15 books and over 100 articles, the most recent of which is “Why Are We Waiting? Tackling Climate Change: The Logic, Urgency, and Promise.
