Mona Hanna-Attisha is an Iraqi-American pediatrician, professor, and public health advocate known for exposing the Flint water crisis. As director of the Pediatric Residency Program at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Michigan, she discovered elevated lead levels in children’s blood in 2015, linking it to the city’s switch to the Flint River water source.
Her research and advocacy, despite initial resistance from officials, led to a public health emergency declaration and national attention to the crisis. Her book, “What the Eyes Don’t See” (2018), details her role and the broader implications of environmental injustice.
