Michael Wilson is an American stage and film director who has worked on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and at some of the country's most prestigious resident theatres. He decided to make his screen directorial debut with the Lifetime/Ostar television film adaptation of Horton Foote's The Trip to Bountiful, which was shortlisted for two 2014 Emmy Awards, six 2015 NAACP/Image Awards, including Outstanding Television Movie, and a DGA Award for Outstanding Direction of a Movie or Mini-Series for Television. The film earned three NAACP/Image Awards in 2015: the Black Reel Award for Outstanding TV Movie, the Gracie Allen Award for Outstanding Ensemble Cast, and the Black Reel Award for Outstanding TV Movie (in addition to Tyson and Underwood, the cast included Keke Palmer, Vanessa Williams, and Clancy Brown). Uzo Aduba, Maggie Grace, Elizabeth McGovern, Adam Brody, and Cicely Tyson appeared in his debut independent film, Showing Roots, which was produced by Michael Mailer Films in collaboration with Bill Haber and starring Uzo Aduba, Maggie Grace, Elizabeth McGovern, Adam Brody, and Cicely Tyson. It was bought by Lifetime for airing in May 2016 after winning Best Narrative Film prizes at the 2015 Bahamas and 2016 Maryland International Film (Hagerstown) Festivals. Wilson directed Cicely Tyson, Cuba Gooding Jr, Vanessa Williams, and Condola Rashad in the Tony Award-winning production of The Trip to Bountiful on Broadway in 2013. Other Broadway productions include James Earl Jones, Angela Lansbury, Candice Bergen, John Larroquette, Eric McCormack, John Stamos, Kristin Davis, and Michael McKean in the Tony-nominated revival of Gore Vidal's The Best Man (starring James Earl Jones, Angela Lansbury, Candice Bergen, John Larroquette, John Stamos, Kristin Davis, and Michael McKean); the Tony-nominated Best Plays Dividing the Estate (starring Jayne Atkinson and Molly Ringwald). He directed the 2015 Signature production of Arthur Miller's Incident at Vichy, starring Richard Thomas, which was later filmed for television and shown in 2016 on WNET 13 and BroadwayHD's Theater Close-Up. For his directing of Foote's three-part, nine-hour epic The Orphans' Home Cycle, he earned Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards in 2010. During the 1995 Venice Biennale, he directed both sections of Tony Kushner's Angels in America. Recent projects include the American Repertory Theatre revival of The Night of the Iguana, starring Bill Heck, Dana Delaney, James Earl Jones, and Amanda Plummer (2017); the CTG/Ahmanson Theater's Los Angeles premiere of Grey Gardens: The Musical, starring Betty Buckley and Rachel York (2016); and the Alley Theatre workshop of the new musical Tender Mercies, starring Betty Buckley and Rachel York (2016). Wilson, who has served as Treasurer of SDC since 2015, was Artistic Director of Hartford Stage from 1998 to 2011 when he commissioned and developed Quiara Alegria Hudes' Pulitzer Prize-winning play Water by the Spoonful.
