Michael W. Twitty began his Cooking Gene project which would form the basis for his 2017 book The Cooking Gene. For the Cooking Gene project and in his book The Cooking Gene Twitty traces his ancestry through from Africa to America and from slavery to freedom.
Twitty is also the first ever Revolutionary in Residence at Colonial Williamsburg and the founder of the Southern Discomfort Tour a journey through the American South designed to raise awareness about the impact racism had on Southern cuisine.
