Michael Linden Biography

Michael Linden is American Progress's Director of Tax and Budget Policy. Michael's research focuses on the federal budget, as well as the medium and long-term deficits. He co-authored a number of papers on the reasons and remedies to our fiscal problems, including "Path to Balance," which suggested primary balance as an intermediate objective for the first time, and "A First Step," which contained a detailed strategy for attaining it. Michael invented the term "deficit peacock" as well. He appears often on CNBC, and his work has been featured in publications such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, and National Public Radio. Prior to joining CAP, he was the director and later senior director of tax and budget policy at First Focus, a national children's advocacy group. Michael wrote the first and second books in the Children's Budget series while at First Focus. Michael has authored numerous studies on recession-related child poverty, the most recent of which prompted Connecticut's state senate to form a special task group on children in the recession. Michael graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with a master's degree in public policy. He worked as a consultant for a number of clients in the Bay Area, including the Oakland Police Department, the Contra Costa Unified School District, and the successful campaign for state attorney general by then-mayor of Oakland Jerry Brown. Michael was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, before going to Brown University for college. Michael has lived in Munich, Providence, Chicago, Oakland, and currently Washington, D.C. with his wife and kid, in addition to his hometown.
