Mark Reich Biography

Mark Reich is the Chief Operating Officer of the Lean Enterprise Institute, where he oversees new product development and the Co-Learning Partners program, which provides support to businesses through lean transformations. He worked with Toyota in Japan and North America for 23 years, most recently as general manager of the Toyota Production System Support Center (TSSC). He directly implemented or managed the Toyota Production System (TPS) in a number of sectors, including automotive, food, furniture, and healthcare, among others, as a hands-on GM. He increased the number of TSSC-supported firms from 20 to 40. He changed it from a for-profit to a nonprofit corporation so that it could focus on its original purpose of strengthening North American manufacturing and assisting any firm interested in applying TPS. Beyond manufacturing, he extended the customer base to include hospitals, schools, low-income food distribution, and nationally recognized NGOs. He was formerly assistant general manager of the corporate strategy division, where he oversaw and executed Toyota's North American strategic (hoshin) approach, which was developed in collaboration with Toyota's headquarters in Japan. He spearheaded efforts in North America to enhance Toyota Way principles in administrative areas, as well as the unification of the company's design and production groups. Reich graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University with a bachelor's degree in English and went on to Nanzan University to study Japanese.
