Mark Burnette Biography

The Shareholder-in-Charge of LBMC's Information Security practice is Mark Burnette. He has 22 years of information technology and risk management experience. Mark has significant expertise in security program planning and implementation, regulatory enforcement, security policies and procedures, risk evaluation and management, penetration testing, and the design, development, and staffing of security functions. Mark is highly enthusiastic about cybersecurity leadership and the advancement of the field. Mark worked for many years in key leadership roles for two of the Big 6 (now Big 4) accounting firms, served as President and Global Practice Leader for national information security consulting firm, and built and led information security functions for two major publicly traded corporations, winning several national awards for his leadership. Mark was elected a Fellow of the Information Systems Security Association (ISSA), a global trade association representing information security practitioners, in January 2011. The ISSA Fellow Program bestows this coveted award, which has only been conferred on a few persons worldwide, for distinguished contributions in the area of information security, leadership, and potential contribution to the organization and career. Mark's unusual experience helps him to approach all of LBMC's security engagements from the viewpoint of "walking a mile in their shoes." His background in establishing and leading information management roles enables him to provide solutions that are applicable, realistic, and actionable. Mark has appeared as a subject matter specialist on ABC and CBS network stations, has been written in print media such as CSO, Secure Enterprise, Information Management, and ComputerWorld publications, and has been interviewed by ABCnews.com, among numerous other media appearances. Mark's charismatic approach has earned him a reputation as a prominent and in-demand speaker at international conventions and specialist groups all over the world. Mark's book, "Risky Business: Cybersecurity Leadership The Right Way," was released in 2019. It offers realistic advice on cybersecurity leadership. Mark has been named one of the 75?Pioneer? in the cybersecurity industry for being one of the first enterprise CISOs and laying the groundwork for today's CISO role. In March 2019, Mark gave a TEDxNashville talk titled "The Humanity Behind Cybersecurity Attacks," which was a huge hit. Mark received his Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Carson-Newman College, where he was a placekicker for C-nationally N's ranked NCAA Division II college football team and graduated summa cum laude. He earned his master's degree in accounting from the University of Tennessee, where he has worked as a graduate teaching assistant. On September 11, 2008, Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen presented Mark with a Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of exemplary service in the best interests and highest traditions of the State of Tennessee for his cumulative contributions as a security leader serving his society and his State.
