Lisa Cooper Biography

At the Johns Hopkins Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health, Lisa A. Cooper is a Bloomberg Distinguished Professor. She is also a key faculty member at the Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology, and Clinical Research and the James Fries Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine. Dr. Cooper was born in Liberia, West Africa, where she observed the consequences of poverty on the health of many of her fellow people, inspiring her to pursue a career in medicine and public health. Dr. Cooper is now the director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Equity. Dr. Cooper testified at US Congressional hearings in 2011 on health inequalities, diversity in the healthcare workforce, cultural competence training for healthcare workers, and biomedical research funding. While pursuing a postdoctoral residency in general internal medicine at the School of Medicine, she obtained her MPH at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.
