Lauren Markham is an award-winning journalist, author, and educator focused on migration, youth, the environment, and social justice. Based in Berkeley, California, and of Greek heritage, she has worked for over two decades in refugee resettlement and immigrant education. She teaches at universities including the University of San Francisco and holds an MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Her debut book, “The Far Away Brothers: Two Young Migrants and the Making of an American Life” (2017), follows Salvadoran twin brothers navigating life in the U.S. after fleeing gang violence. It won the Ridenhour Book Prize, a Northern California Book Award, and other honors. Her second book, “A Map of Future Ruins: On Borders and Belonging” (2024), explores migration, borders, and identity through the lens of a Greek refugee camp fire and her own heritage.
