Larry Brilliant's career path has proven deserving of his surname, as unexpected as it is inspiring. In the early 1970s, he was living in a Himalayan monastery when his teacher informed him he should help eradicate smallpox from the globe.
He became involved in the World Health Organization's smallpox eradication initiative, oversaw efforts to eradicate the illness in India, and finally presided over the world's last case of smallpox.
