Khiara Bridges Biography

Khiara M. Bridges is an esteemed legal scholar and professor at the UC Berkeley School of Law whose research and writing focus on the intersection of race, class, and reproductive rights. She has published numerous articles on these topics in various academic journals, including the Harvard Law Review, Stanford Law Review, Columbia Law Review, California Law Review, NYU Law Review, and Virginia Law Review, among others. In addition to her scholarly articles, she has authored three books: Reproducing Race: An Ethnography of Pregnancy as a Site of Racialization (2011), The Poverty of Privacy Rights (2017), and Critical Race Theory: A Primer (2019). Bridges is also an active co-editor of a book series on reproductive justice published by the University of California Press. Her academic achievements include graduating as the valedictorian of Spelman College, where she earned her degree in three years. She also holds a J.D. from Columbia Law School and a Ph.D. with distinction from Columbia University’s Department of Anthropology. While in law school, Bridges served as a teaching assistant for former dean David Leebron (Torts) and the late E. Allan Farnsworth (Contracts) and was a member of the Columbia Law Review and a Kent Scholar. She is also a talented and classically trained ballet dancer, is fluent in Spanish, and has a basic understanding of Arabic.
