Keisha N. Blain Biography

One of the most creative and significant young historians of her generation is Dr. Keisha N. Blain. Her writing and research investigate the racial, gender, and political dynamics from both domestic and international viewpoints. In 2014, she earned her Ph.D. in history from Princeton University. She was the previous president of the African American Intellectual History Society, a professor of Africana studies and history at Brown University, and a writer for MSNBC (AAIHS). She will get a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2022, as well as an Andrew Carnegie Fellowship. Set the World on Fire: Black Nationalist Women and the Global Struggle for Freedom, by Dr. Blain, was published in 2018 and received the Darlene Clark Hine Award from the Organization of American Historians as well as the First Book Award from the Berkshire Conference of Women Historians. The most recent book by Dr. Blain, Until I Am Free: Fannie Lou Hamer's Enduring Message to America (2021), was shortlisted for a 2022 National Book Critics Circle Award in Biography and nominated for an NAACP Image Award. Dr. Blain is also a co-editor of the books Charleston Syllabus: Readings on Race, Racism, and Racial Violence, To Turn the Whole World Over: Black Women and Internationalism (2019), and New Perspectives on the Black Intellectual Tradition (2018). (2016). Her most recent book, Four Hundred Souls: A Community History of African America, 1619–2019, which she co-edited with Ibram X. Kendi, is the #1 New York Times Best Seller (2021). The Carnegie Medal of Excellence in Nonfiction for 2022 has chosen Four Hundred Souls as a finalist. The Atlantic, The Washington Post, The Guardian, The Nation, Foreign Affairs, and other publications have published Dr. Blain's articles. On national, local, and worldwide media venues like BBC, PBS, MSNBC, CNN, NPR, and Al Jazeera, she regularly delivers comments. In addition to the W.E.B. Du Bois Fellowship at Harvard University, she has also received fellowships from New America, the Institute for Advanced Study, the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy, and the American Association of University Women (AAUW), and the Ford Foundation. She was chosen for the Distinguished Lectureship Program of the Organization of American Historians in 2018. She is a highly sought-after lecturer on women's and gender studies, African American history, United States history, and African diaspora studies.
