Carolyn Jefferson-Jenkins Biography

Dr. Carolyn Jefferson-Jenkins is a social historian, activist, and expert in the fields of women's equity and inclusion, suffrage, education, and health care reform. Dr. Jefferson-Jenkins decided to engage in education after being inspired by her grandmother's profession as a teacher. She spent several years working as a teacher and administrator in public schools. At the moment, she is an adjunct assistant professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's School of Education. Dr. Jefferson-Jenkins has long been an active member of the League of Women Voters. As the first woman of color to occupy the office, she was chosen as the League of Women Voters' 15th national president in 1998. She also held the position of head of the League of Women Voters Education Fund, promoted campaign financing and election reform, and campaigned to increase voter turnout in all elections while putting more emphasis on municipal elections. Dr. Jefferson-Jenkins is also an author. The Road to Black Suffrage, One Man One Vote: The History of the African-American Vote in the United States, and The Untold Story of Women of Color in the League of Women Voters are some of the publications and periodicals to which she has contributed her writing throughout the years. Dr. Jefferson-Jenkins received the Miami University Freedom Summer of '64 Award on March 12, 2020.
