Katie Kitamura Biography

Katie Kitamura is an American novelist, journalist, and art critic of Japanese descent. Raised in Davis, California, she earned a B.A. from Princeton and a Ph.D. from the London Consortium. A former ballerina, she teaches creative writing at NYU and is an Honorary Research Fellow at the London Consortium. Kitamura has published five novels: “The Longshot” (2009), “Gone to the Forest” (2013), “A Separation” (2017), “Intimacies” (2021), and “Audition’ (2025). Intimacies, a National Book Award finalist, was among The New York Times' 10 Best Books of 2021. Her novels, translated into 24 languages, explore identity and morality through introspective narrators. She has received a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Rome Prize. Her nonfiction, including “Japanese for Travellers” (2006), and articles on art and film appear in The New York Times and Granta.
