Karen grew up in Southern California as a tomboy and competitive tennis player. At the age of 15 she realized she wanted to go to Wall Street.
During her senior year in high school she informed her parents that she was applying only to the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania as that was the surest route to get there. After graduating from Wharton in 1987 Karen headed to Wall Street and began her career at First City Capital.
