Julie has been a resident of the Curtin electorate for over 26 years, but she grew up on a cherry and apple orchard in the Adelaide Hills. "I grew up on a farm with my parents, two sisters and a brother, my grandparents, 2 uncles and aunties, and 4 cousins." The work ethic was one of diligence.

Some of my earliest memories include picking fruit in the orchard, rounding up sheep, and assisting in the packing shed." She went to Basket Range Primary School and St Peter's Girls' School for secondary school, where she was Head Prefect in Year 12. Julie graduated from Adelaide University with a law degree in 1978.

"Like many University students, I worked a couple of part-time jobs, including working in the bars at Football Park West Lakes during the football season and in the Adelaide Hills' local hotels and restaurants." It was good for my character!" She practised law in Adelaide, becoming a partner in an Adelaide law firm at the age of 26 before moving to Perth in 1983.

"As a young lawyer, I gained valuable experience working in a variety of fields, including the Saturday morning duty solicitor round in the magistrate's court, where I handled bail applications for those arrested overnight." I enjoyed working in court and decided to pursue a career as a litigation lawyer.

Julie worked as a commercial litigation lawyer at Clayton Utz (formerly Robinson Cox) from 1983 to 1998. Julie was appointed Managing Partner of Clayton Utz's Perth office in 1994, which had 27 partners and approximately 200 employees at the time.

She represented Clayton Utz Perth at two international law firm networks' biannual legal conferences, which were held in Boston, Washington, Mexico City, Amsterdam, Vienna, Santiago, Kuala Lumpur, and Sydney.

"I learned a lot not only about how other law firms around the world were managed, but also about the rapidly changing trends in the law, particularly the globalisation of legal practises in the 1990s." Julie took a three-month sabbatical from the firm in 1996 to attend Harvard Business School's Advanced Management Programme for Senior Managers.

"The current chair of National Australia Bank, Michael Chaney, who attended in 1992, suggested this course to me." Leading Australians have participated in this internationally renowned course, including Fairfax Media Group CEO Brian McCarthy and Chief of Air Force, Air Marshall Mark Binskin." Julie was hired as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention in Canberra in 1998, which debated whether Australia should be a republic.

A few months later, she was supported as the Liberal candidate for the Curtin seat, which she won in the October 1998 General Election. Julie served as a Commonwealth of Nations electoral observer in Zimbabwe's parliamentary and presidential elections in 2000 and 2002.

Julie enjoys running in her spare time and participates in the annual Perth City to Surf fun run. She is a West Coast Eagles fan and serves on the Club's board of directors.
