Well known for her idea on gender performativity, Judith Butler is a queer theorist and post-structuralist philosopher. Her work spans from Kafka and loss, mourning, feminist and sexuality studies, to 19th- and 20th-century European literature and philosophy, war, modern philosophical fiction and literary theory.

For her teaching and scholarship, she received numerous awards including a Rockefeller fellowship, Yale's Brudner Prize, Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Distinguished Achievement Award and Guggenheim fellowship. Books written by her include Frames of War: When Is Life Grievable?; Bodies That Matter: On the Discursive Limits of Sex and Undoing Gender Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity.
