Raised in Dalton, Georgia, he enlisted after high school and served as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal technician, deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan.

In 2010, during his Afghanistan tour, he stepped on an IED, losing both legs above the knee and suffering severe arm injuries. After recovering at Walter Reed, he founded a peer support program for wounded veterans and worked on Capitol Hill advocating for them. He earned a degree from Georgetown University.
