John Mearsheimer Biography
John J. Mearsheimer is the R. Wendell Harrison Distinguished Service Professor of Political Science at the University of Chicago, where he has taught since 1982. He is also the co-director of the Program on International Security Policy. He graduated from West Point in 1970 and went on to serve in the United States Air Force for five years. In 1975, he began graduate studies in political science at Cornell University. In 1980, he got his Ph.D. From 1979 to 1980, he was a research fellow at the Brookings Institution, and from 1980 to 1982, he was a post-doctoral fellow at Harvard University's Center for International Affairs. He was the Whitney H. Shepardson Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York during the 1998-1999 academic year, and he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2003. Professor Mearsheimer has authored several articles on security problems and worldwide national politics. Conventional Deterrence (1983), which received the Edgar S. Furniss, Jr. Book Award, Liddell Hart and the Weight of History (1988), and The Tragedy of Great Power Politics (2001), which won the Joseph Lepgold Book Prize, is his three works. He has also published several essays in scholarly publications such as International Security and popular magazines such as The Atlantic. In addition, he has published a series of op-ed pieces for The New York Times on issues such as Bosnia, nuclear proliferation, US policy toward India, Arab-Israeli peace initiatives, and the folly of invading Iraq. Professor Mearsheimer has also received a number of teaching prizes. In 1977, while a graduate student at Cornell, he earned the Clark Award for Distinguished Teaching, and in 1985, he got the Quantrell Award for Distinguished Teaching at the University of Chicago. He was also named a Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar for the academic year 1993-1994. He presented a series of speeches at eight colleges and institutions in that capacity. He was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2003.
