The Economy Is Always Fascinating, Even When It's Messy. Maggs, who appears often on CNN, MSNBC, and NPR and is a regular participant on Gwen Ifill's Washington Week, gives a prediction of legislative and executive actions as well as a plain-English description of what the government is really doing.

He has been one of the most recognized and evenhanded observers on the momentous events that are reshaping the US economy since the financial and economic problems began in 2007.

He has written extensively on the financial crisis and the government's response; the housing catastrophe; the impact of the economic slump on manufacturing, services, and international commerce; and the differential effects of these events across regions.

He published a number of pieces in the late 1990s and early 2000s warning of the housing bubble, the expansion of household debt, and the risk of a global economic disaster. Maggs published a big essay in 2005 examining the evidence supporting the likelihood that the stock market in the United States has entered another twenty-year bear market.

Prior to his present position, he spent three years travelling the country for a National Journal feature called Laboratories of Democracy, reporting on local government innovation. Community courts in Vermont, municipal broadband in California, and employer-run childcare in Washington State were among the topics covered. International Trade is covered.

Maggs worked as a senior correspondent in Washington for the New York-based Journal of Commerce, a daily business newspaper, before joining National Journal. He covered international trade talks and summit meetings as the main international economic correspondent, reporting frequently from Europe, Latin America, and East Asia.

The trade conflicts between the United States and Japan in the 1990s, the North American Free Trade Agreement, and the establishment of the World Trade Organization were all major stories. He sponsored lunches for newsmakers and other guests as a member of the National Press Club's board of governors, which were carried on television and radio.

He assisted in the production of a documentary about money in politics for PBS' Frontline series, among other freelancing work.
