If Dr. Norman Vincent Peale were to rewrite his bestselling book, "The Power of Positive Thinking," today he would have to include a special section on John Kriesel.

Kriesel was nearly blown to shreds in 2006 by a 200-pound bomb blast in Iraq's parched dunes, but battlefield angels in military uniforms kept him breathing long enough for him to reach a medical centre. He died 3 times before being shocked back from the dead. He made it through four hospitals, thirty-five surgeries, and months of recuperation.

He lost both legs and faced numerous other severe injuries, but the loss of two good friends was the most painful. After nine months, the man who wasn't expected to live and was told he'd be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life walked out of Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Working with writer Jim Kosmo, Kriesel shares his inspirational story in "STILL STANDING: The Story of SSG John Kriesel," which has won eight national book prizes.

4 years after his near-death encounter in Iraq, Kriesel began working as a civil marketing employee for the Minnesota Army National Guard and was given the name Director of Veteran Services for a county in Suburban Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 2012.

He is also a part-time KFAN Sports Radio contributor as well as a former member of the Minnesota House of Representatives. He was elected to the House in 2010 after a bruising campaign in which he was told he would not be able to win in his neighborhood.

He visited thousands of homes in all weather conditions, wearing out the socket in one of his artificial limbs. He was victorious. After years of active duty in Kosovo and Iraq, as well as lengthy medical healing, Kriesel's family wanted him to spend more time with them, so he decided not to run for re-election.

He was anything but a quiet freshman as a lawmaker, frequently challenging even his party and speaking his mind. "Kriesel's candour is a breath of fresh air at the Capitol," the Minneapolis Star-Tribune proclaimed.

He proceeds to share his optimistic, motivational memo with businesses and organisations across the United States, in addition to serving veterans in the Twin Cities and being a regular voice on KFAN's Power Trip Morning Show.
