Milwaukee-born writer and historian John Gurda has been researching his hometown since 1972. He has twenty-one books to his credit, including histories of Milwaukee neighborhoods, industries, and places of worship.

The Making of Milwaukee, the first full-length history of the city published since 1948, and Milwaukee: City of Neighborhoods, a geography companion that has swiftly become the standard study on grassroots Milwaukee, are two of Gurda's most ambitious works. The volumes have a total of over 900 pages and 2,000 pictures between them.

The Making of Milwaukee was the inspiration for a documentary series that aired on Milwaukee Public Television in 2006 and won an Emmy Award. Gurda is a speaker, tour guide, and local history columnist for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, in addition to being an author. He graduated from Boston College with a B.A. in English and an M.A.

in Cultural Geography and an honorary Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The idea of history as "why things are the way they are" runs through all of Gurda's work.
