Milwaukee-born writer and historian John Gurda has been researching his hometown since 1972. He has twenty-one books to his credit, including histories of Milwaukee neighborhoods, industries, and places of worship.
The Making of Milwaukee, the first full-length history of the city published since 1948, and Milwaukee: City of Neighborhoods, a geography companion that has swiftly become the standard study on grassroots Milwaukee, are two of Gurda's most ambitious works. The volumes have a total of over 900 pages and 2,000 pictures between them.
