Joe Manchin is an American politician and former Senator known for his centrist stance in the Democratic Party. A lifelong West Virginian, he grew up in a small coal-mining town, the son of a furniture store owner and grandson of Italian immigrants. Manchin played football at West Virginia University on a scholarship, graduating in 1970 with a business administration degree. A knee injury ended his athletic career, leading him to take over the family business, Enersystems, a coal brokerage firm.
Manchin's political career began in 1982 when he was elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates, followed by the state Senate in 1986. He served as West Virginia's Secretary of State from 2001 to 2005 and governor from 2005 to 2010. Elected to the U.S. Senate in a 2010 special election after Robert Byrd's death, he served until January 3, 2025, representing a deeply conservative state as a Democrat. Known for bucking party lines, Manchin often frustrated liberals by opposing progressive policies like the Build Back Better Act and filibuster reform while supporting fossil fuel interests, reflecting West Virginia's coal industry. His vote was pivotal in passing Biden's Inflation Reduction Act in 2022.
