Jim Walker Biography

Mr. Walker received his BA from UCLA and his MA from UC Berkeley. He is a retired public high school teacher, principal, and college counsellor from California. He is also a retired independent college counsellor with over 35 years of counselling experience, which he brings to the conference. He and his wife Dorothy retired from public education after 38 years in 1997. Walker Walker & Associates, an independent college counselling service with 7 associates, was founded by them. Before resigning in 2009,Mr. Walker also worked as a college applications reader in the University of California, Berkeley's Office of Undergraduate Admissions for ten years before becoming a university representative to local high schools and once to high schools in Beijing, China.
Mr. Walker founded the Road to College in the East Bay in 2005 in collaboration with the non-profit Gooden College Connection organisation. He matches 64 inner-city high school juniors and their parents or guardians with volunteer college counsellors. The counsellors offer 75-minute intensive and comprehensive college advising sessions, as well as a handbook and a plan of action. Mr. Walker was a founding member of the Higher Education Consultants Association and a member of the Western and National Associations of College Admission Counseling. Mr. Walker now volunteers as a college counsellor in Richmond, California, for inner-city high school students. He also enjoys travelling and spending time with his 13 grandchildren. Jim lives in Kensington, California, with his wife.
