Melissa had Camp spellbound; she was completely absorbed in adoration and unaware of everything going on around her. Although they had a flirty friendship at first, their attraction was obvious and undoubtedly compelling. Camp and the friend who introduced them were caught up in a sort of love triangle when Melissa unexpectedly stopped the two's developing romance. Camp's feelings were hurt. Camp, though, put everything on hold when he learned that Melissa had cancer and rushed right over to be at her side. The cancer returned after a divinely inspired hospital proposal, chemo treatments throughout their engagement, and a large, happy wedding when she reached remission. Camp continued to play for crowds in Southern California as his wife fought illness, sharing their testimonies and pleading and trusting for a miracle. Camp had no desire to continue producing songs when Melissa lost her battle in 2001. After meeting a preacher who had experienced a great deal of hardship himself, Camp was inspired to carry on despite his sorrow and suffering. After Melissa passed away, Camp was inspired to carry on sharing his tale by her enormous and persistent confidence that her struggle with cancer and eventual death would be worthwhile if even one person came to know the Lord. Through his greatest difficulty, Camp remained resolute to continue preaching God's faithfulness, and the Lord continued to use his words and songs to minister, impacting thousands of souls in the audience.
