He prefers a skilled, ball-controlling game and regards his players as first-rate athletes and guys. Martin has also represented soccer as president of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and as a member of the NCAA Division III selection committee for six years, four of which he chaired. For the past nine seasons, he has worked as a color analyst for the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer. In addition, in January 2003, he took over as editor of the NSCAA's The Soccer Journal, becoming the publication's third editor since its inception in 1950. Martin is a physical education professor at Ohio Wesleyan and was the Battling Bishops' athletic director from 1985 until 2004. Ohio Wesleyan college athletics experienced remarkable success during his 19 years as athletics director. From 1988 through 1994, Ohio Wesleyan set a conference record by winning six consecutive NCAC all-sports titles. Under Martin's direction, the Battling Bishops have finished in the top 25 of the NACDA Directors Cup NCAA Division III standings in six of the previous eight academic years. Martin joined the Ohio Wesleyan faculty after working as a two-sport assistant at The Ohio State University, where he earned both an M.A. and a Ph.D. Previously, he was the director of sport at the YMCA in Munich, Germany, where he coached soccer, volleyball, basketball, and lacrosse, as well as the athletics director at the American International School in Dusseldorf. Martin, a native of Hingham, Massachusetts, earned his B.A. from Springfield College in 1971. He lettered in soccer and lacrosse, where he earned All-America honors in the latter. In Germany, he also played soccer for the Kaiserwerth Club, professional basketball, and worked on the Volleyball Pavilion crew at the 1972 Olympics.
