Jawed Karim Biography

Jawed Karim is a Bangladeshi-German-American computer scientist and Internet entrepreneur. He co-founded YouTube and was the first person to submit a video to the platform. As of January 2020, the first video, Me at the Zoo, which was published on April 23, 2005, had been seen over 83 million times. Karim created many of the basic components of PayPal's real-time anti-internet-fraud system while working there, where he met fellow YouTube co-founders Steven Chen and Chad Hurley. Karim was born in Merseburg, East Germany, on October 28, 1979, to a Bangladeshi father and a German mother. In 1992, Karim and his family relocated to Saint Paul, Minnesota. He attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Department of Computer Science after graduating from Saint Paul Central High School. He left college before graduating to work at PayPal as an early employee, but he completed his studies and earned a bachelor's degree in computer science. He went on to Stanford University to get a master's degree in computer science. He dated British writer Kia Abdullah from 2009 to 2010. Both of them are still buddies. Karim interned at Silicon Graphics, Inc. in 1998, where he worked on 3D voxel data management for very large data sets for volume rendering, including the Visible Human Project data. He met Chad Hurley and Steve Chen while working at PayPal. They created the YouTube video-sharing service three years later, in 2005. Karim posted the first video on YouTube on April 23, 2005. Karim enrolled as a graduate student in computer science at Stanford University while functioning as an adviser to YouTube after co-founding the firm and establishing the YouTube concept and website with Chad Hurley and Steve Chen. Karim opted not to be an employee and instead serve as an informal consultant when the site launched in February 2005, stating that he was concentrating on his education. As a result, he received a considerably smaller part of the firm than Hurley and Chen. Karim was mainly unknown to the public as the third founder due to his minor role in the firm until YouTube was bought by Google in 2006. Despite his smaller stake in the firm, the acquisition was substantial enough for him to obtain 137,443 shares of stock, which were worth roughly $64 million at the time, based on Google's closing stock price. Karim presented a talk about YouTube's origins at the University of Illinois' annual ACM Conference in October 2006, titled YouTube From Concept to Hyper-Growth. In May 2007, Karim returned to the University of Illinois as the 136th and youngest Commencement Speaker in the university's history.
